What is PBR material?

Catégorie blogGlossary

A virtual material pipeline that can simulate any physical material to improve 3D models.

What does PBR material stand for?

PBR material stands for physics-based rendering material.

What is the purpose of using PBR material?

This virtual pipeline of materials includes a multitude of parameters such as base color, metalness and roughness. PBR material can simulate any physical material, including tiles, various types of wood, metal, facades and backdrops. It is therefore commonly used to add a realistic feel and textures to 3D models.

Here are some examples of PBR materials that can be used:

How is PBR material created?

It is possible to create physically based shading with a polarized camera system, however, today many third parties on the web offer existing PBR material.

At Visao, we use these six parameters:

  • Base color
  • Metalness
  • Roughness
  • Emissive
  • Occlusion
  • Normal
